Ignaz Anton Pilat was among Olmsteds chief assistants. In his native Austria, Pilat was a noted landscape architect and gardener. Under Olmsteds authority, Pilat was in charge of planning Central Parks groves, shrubs, herbs, and gardens.(11) Pilats contributions to the park were vital to the overall vision Olmsted hoped to achieve for Central Park. Olmsted envisioned the park as a place of relaxation where New Yorkers could escape. The selection and arrangement of plant life chosen by Pilat was an essential element in order to create the desired haven-like effect.(12)
