CENTRAL PARK......AN EVOLUTION
Samuel Parsons Jr.

Samuel Parsons Jr. was hired at the Department of Public parks in 1883, at the recommendation of Calvert Vaux, as superintendent of planting.(14)  Parsons, who was a strong proponent of the Olmstedian vision of Central Park, did much to maintain the integrity and original character of Central park during his position as superintendent of planting.  For instance, the superintendent prior to Parsons had destroyed a long string of trees along the boarders of the park so that visitors could see the tall building s without obstruction.  Once in office, Parsons ensured that these trees were re-grown.  Parsons resigned from his position in 1911, and despite all his efforts the Central Park began to look neglected due to a lack of funding.(15)
